The Department of  Public Works plans and maintains the City’s water, sewer, storm drainage, street, and traffic infrastructure; vehicle fleet, public facilities, right-of-way and parks recreation fields. 

The DPW consists of four major divisions; Administration, Engineering, Utilities, and Maintenance  Services. DPW provides essential services to Downey population of over 100,000 extending over an area of 12.6 square miles.

Major Goals of the Department   

  1. Protect the City's investment in its roadway, water, sewer, drainage, and sidewalk infrastructure inspection, maintenance and improvement programs.

  2. Enhancing City's Vitality and Quality of life.

  3. Provide high quality and cost effective services to the citizens.

  4. Protect the city's natural resources in a manner compatible with policies, codes, and regulations.

  5. Encourage staff development of Public Works employees, through training, and use of latest technology.
